Uncorking a Portuguese standby, a warm friend on a chilly night when spring hasn’t quite yet spring—though the calendar’s switch to daylight savings time tells you different… that’s when a nice reliable tawny port from Dow, nonvintage—not aged to 10, 20, or 30 years—sidles up to you like an old friend.
I favor the tawnies when I’m in the U.S. and seeking a weekly quaff, for their balance of blue and red fruits touched with light notes of caramel—and sometimes a tinge of hazelnut as I found in this version of Dow’s recent release.
Plus, it stays fresh enough in the fridge for a week’s worth of après-dinner nightcaps.
