Spring follows autumn as my favorite season—while the latter signals harvest with its bronzing leaves, the former heralds budbreak, the most promising time in the vineyard.
The tight little spires of leafing green emerge from the shells on each branch, straining until they literally break free and unfurl into the feuilles that will harness the sun’s rays and turn them into energy for the grapes to come.
While I’m far from the vines of Portugal, I see their buds echo in the beginnings of sprouting tips on the lilacs in our garden at Vivenda Vista de Paz in Maryland. And with spring-focused wines to taste, I feel the promise as well.
