Farah’s Tandoori, in Carcavelos

A little more than two years ago, we sought a new place for lunch that would take us away from our usual burgers and traditional Portuguese spots…and we lucked upon Farah’s Tandoori, in Quinta de São Gonçalo in Carcavelos. Tucked away in a corner, the Indian restaurant serves up a wide variety of favorites, but with a special twist applied by the proprietors: an emphasis on fresh flavors, good vegetarian options, and Goan specialties as well.

Yes, you can get a very tasty Butter Chicken or Tikka Masala, but it’s more interesting to try unique dishes such as vegetable koftas, made with lentils, or Goan shrimp curries–or even a mango lassi made to order. The owners will also venture afield; as longtime restauranteurs, they have a deft hand in the kitchen and a wider repertoire than a standard menu suggests. Case in point? Rosie’s tiramisu, which is simply the best we’ve ever had…creamy and rich, with just the right touch of liqueur. It’s worth calling ahead to see if she’s made some for that day!

The lunch specials range from a stuffed eggplant with paneer to shrimp with coconut sauce, and include a few traditional favorites too. With a well-priced bottle of wine, and a sunny day on the patio, it makes for a great mid-day respite or a fun evening. Plus, they’re just a quick walk from the beach.
